(PLACERVILLE, CA) -- The El Dorado County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures will celebrate Weights and Measures week March 1-7, 2019. The theme this year is “Valued Traditions and New Innovations – Confidence in Every Transaction”. The focus of Weights and Measures is to assure consumers get what they paid for and that businesses get paid for the goods and services they sell.
“The date for Weights and Measures Week is significant as it marks the signing of the first weights and measures law by John Adams on March 2, 1799” said Charlene Carveth, Sealer of Weights and Measures for the County of El Dorado. “During this time, we have seen a number of fast-changing innovations in the marketplace from highly sophisticated software-based weighing and measuring instruments to apps used on smart phones for transportation network measuring systems.”
County inspectors are working every day testing devices in gas stations, supermarkets, and Farmers’ Markets to ensure a fair and equitable marketplace. Inspectors also verify that advertised prices match what is charged at the checkout counter and the amount of product inside the box matches the claims on the outside. Inspectors are also on the lookout for the highly sophisticated credit card skimmers that are being installed illegally in gas pumps across the state.
The department can be reached at 530-621-5520 for any questions or complaints about transactions involving weighting and measuring devices. For more information about the department, see the website here.
