The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States. For subsequent acts of heroism, recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross are awarded an oak leaf cluster The Navy Cross was established on February 4, 1919. The medal is awarded to any person while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps who distinguishes himself with extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor - (1) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; (2) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or (3) while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the U.S. is not a belligerent party. To warrant this distinctive decoration the act should involve risk of life so extraordinary as to set this person apart from his contemporaries.

image of the Air Force CrossThe Air Force Cross was established by Congress in July of 1960. This medal was established as the parallel to the Army Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross. The recipients are those that set themselves apart through extraordinary heroism and valor in combat. The Humanitarian Service Medal was established by Executive Order 11965 of 19 January 1977. This medal is awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who, after 1 April 1975 distinguished themselves by meritorious direct participation in a Department of Defense approved significant military act or operation of a humanitarian nature.
