El Dorado County Animal Services is offering rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs at low-cost the first Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Placerville Animal Shelter located at 511 Placerville Drive in Placerville. The rabies vaccinations are only $6 each during these special monthly vaccination clinics. Dogs must be on a leash; cats must be in pet carriers. Only cash or personal check will be accepted.
“Vaccinating cats and dogs against rabies is extremely important,” said Henry Brzezinski, Chief of El Dorado County Animal Services. “The rabies virus is present in El Dorado County; several wild animals test positive for the virus each year. Without a current vaccination, pets can get rabies and give it to people and other pets. Left untreated, rabies is almost always fatal.”
El Dorado County’s ordinance requires all dogs over the age of 4 months to be licensed with El Dorado County Animal Services and have a current rabies vaccination. In addition to the monthly rabies vaccination clinics, Animal Services can microchip cats and dogs for only $25 on a walk-in basis during regular business hours. The microchip, about the size of grain of rice, is placed just under the skin of the animal and helps identify the pet through a nationwide computer database if it is lost.
The Placerville Animal Shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. For additional information about El Dorado County Animal Services visit www.edcgov.us/animalservicesor call (530) 621-7631.
