South Lake Tahoe students in grades 8 through 12 are invited to join the Teen Court program. "This highly successful community program gives kids hands-on experience in the juvenile justice system," said Jorge Orozco, Teen Court Coordinator. "Youth serve as attorneys, court clerks, bailiffs and jury members on real cases."  Youth interested in joining Teen Court can attend a hearing and receive program information on February 26, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. at El Dorado County Superior Court, Department 4, located at 1354 Johnson Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

According to Orozco, local volunteer attorneys guide and mentor Teen Court participants in real cases involving a teen who has committed an offense, admitted the offense and chosen to be judged by his/her peers. Superior Court Judges preside over Teen Court.  Teen Court hearings are held Thursday nights at 5:00 p.m. through May 2015 at Superior Court.

The Teen Court program began in 1992 in El Dorado County and is funded through the El Dorado County Health & Human Services Agency, Mental Health Division, Alcohol and Drug Programs. Cases are referred and managed by the El Dorado County Probation Department. The County Superior Court Judges, District Attorney's Office, Public Defender's Office and Sheriff's Office are also important program partners. For more information about Teen Court, please contact Jorge Orozco at (530) 573-7964.
