District Attorney Vern Pierson announces the felony
conviction of Brett Reid for assault with a deadly weapon as well as a special
allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury during the assault.
The seven men and five women jury
heard testimony and evaluated evidence presented by Deputy District Attorney
Miles Perry. During trial the jury learned that the defendant followed the
victim in his vehicle for several miles after a disagreement over a girlfriend.
When the victim stopped and exited his vehicle the defendant swung a baseball
bat at the victim, striking the victim in the head multiple times. The victim
was transported to the hospital where emergency brain surgery was performed to
save his life. The victim still suffers from permanent memory loss and seizures
resulting from the incident. The jury
returned a verdict of guilty and found the special allegation true after two
and half hours of deliberation.
Reid is due to be sentenced by the
Honorable Kenneth J. Melikian in Department 2 of the El Dorado County Superior
Court on October 7, 2016.
