Impaired Motorist Who Killed and Injured Passengers in South Lake Tahoe Collision Pleads No Contest to Gross Vehicular Manslaughter and Driving Under the Influence Causing Gross Bodily Injury

A driver impaired by alcohol who caused the death of one passenger and  great bodily injury to another passenger in a high speed solo vehicle collision in South Lake Tahoe pleaded no contest to all charges filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office. The driver, Olga Pena-Arce, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, pled no contest on September 14th to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated (Penal Code section 191.5 (a)), driving under the influence causing injury (Vehicle Code ยง23153(a)) and driving with a blood alcohol level of greater than .08% causing injury (Vehicle Code section 23153(b)) in front of South Lake Tahoe Superior Court Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury.  Pena-Arce also admitted special allegations that she personally inflicted great bodily injury on a passenger, and that she killed or injured more than one person.  The collision, which took place on November 24th , 2014, took the life of passenger Aimee Campos, 21, of South Lake Tahoe, and injured passenger Wayne Walker 25, of Sacramento.  Pena-Arce will be sentenced in Department 3, El Dorado County Superior Court on November 13th, 2015. 

The case was investigated by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the California Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.  Deputy District Attorney Michael P. Pizzuti, who prosecuted the case, said the maximum possible sentence for the offenses is 12 years, 8 months state prison. Deputy District Attorney Pizzuti is assigned to vertically prosecute felony driving under the influence cases and vehicular manslaughter cases for the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office under a traffic safety grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
