Property

What We Do

The Sheriff’s Property Section receives, processes, stores, and maintains an inventory of items of evidence, found, and safekeeping property. We maintain detailed and accurate records for chain-of-custody of all items through final disposition.

Getting information on a case

Persons requesting information on a case need to have their Sheriff’s report number. If you do not have your case number, contact the Sheriff’s Records section to obtain one at (530) 621-5703.

Contacting the property section (Placerville)

Call (530) 621-5709. You will reach a recording. Please leave your name, case number, phone number, date of the incident and the nature of your call. Property staff will research your case and return your call by the following business day.

Contacting the property section (South Lake Tahoe)

Call (530) 573-3004.You will reach a recording. Please leave your name, case number, phone number, date of the incident and the nature of your call. Property staff is only in South Lake Tahoe’s property section one day a week (usually Tuesday). Staff will research your case and return your call by the following week.

**Note** Our services require an appointment. If you are late for your appointment
    you may be requested to make another appointment.  Appointments are made
    from 0800 – 1500 hrs.

Claiming Property/evidence

Property can be claimed only when either one of the following is true:

  1. The District Attorney’s Office has cleared the case
  2. The Sheriff’s Detectives section has cleared the case.

Claiming safekeeping or found property – contact the property section.

     1.  Found property is held 120 days and if unclaimed can be claimed by the finder.   


Property Releases (By appointment only 8:00 am –  3:00 pm

To pick up your property, contact the Sheriff’s Office, property section at (530) 621-5709 to schedule an appointment. It may take up to two weeks to process your property release request depending on the type of case.

Weapon releases

On cases involving firearms, please contact the property section for information pertaining to their release.
