Local Enforcement Agency

The Local Enforcement Agency (LEA) provides oversight of El Dorado County's solid waste stream -- helping residents toward the goal of diverting 50 percent of our waste from landfills by the year 2000 and protecting public health and the environment.

Local Enforcement Agencies have the primary responsibility for ensuring the correct operation and closure of solid waste facilities in California. They also have responsibilities for guaranteeing the proper storage and transportation of solid wastes. In 1990, California generated approximately 50.9 million tons of waste, or about one ton per second, and disposed of approximately 40.1 million tons. Now, California diverts more than 33 percent of its waste, resulting in disposal of approximately 36.1 million tons per year.

The El Dorado County LEA works cooperatively with the operators and owners of solid waste management companies. Permitting and inspection is carried out by field experts contracted with the Public Health Department. The LEA of El Dorado County is available to assist you with any solid waste questions you have. Call the laboratory at 530-621-6115.
