Children who have health insurance generally have better health throughout their childhood and into their teens. They are more likely to:
- Receive needed shots that prevent disease
- Get treatment for recurring illness such as ear infections and asthma
- Get preventative care to keep them well
- Get sick less often
- Get the treatment they need when they are sick

Child Safety and Injury Prevention Program [top]
Accidental injury is the number one killer of America’s children; taking more lives than disease, violence and suicide.
Prevention is the cure. It is estimated that by taking simple precautions, almost all (90 percent) of these injuries can be avoided.
Child Passenger Safety Seats and Bicycle Helmets are available to purchase for families with an income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. Certified Technicians are available to demonstrate to families who have purchased child seats and helmets how to install and use them correctly.

Welcome to the Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP)! [top]
About TUPP
TUPP is one of 61 Health Jurisdictions in the State of California that receives funding from the Tobacco Tax and Health Protection Act of 1988 (Proposition 99) through the Department of Public Health. In 1990, TUPP was established to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in El Dorado County. It is funded by monies generated by Proposition 99, a state tax on tobacco products. TUPP carries out four program priorities:
- Counter pro-tobacco influences in the community
- Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and increase the number of smoke-free public spaces, worksites, schools and communities
- Reduce availability of tobacco products
- Promote availability of smoking cessation services
TUPP collaborates with community agencies, youth, service and health organizations, local officials and schools throughout El Dorado County to offer a variety of tobacco education, cessation and policy programs:
- Education on the effects of secondhand smoke
- Advocacy regarding tobacco control policies
- Implementation of voluntary policies and state laws
- Information on environmental and social norm change

The
Tobacco Prevention Coalition is an advisory body to Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention Programs. Membership includes representatives from community agencies, schools, organizations, major racial/ethnic groups within local health jurisdictions, and individuals with special interest or expertise in tobacco control.
Mission: Transform El Dorado County into a tobacco-free community. We care about the health of our community; therefore we seek to achieve the maximum reduction in smoking and other tobacco use by focusing on social norm change through education and policy adoption.
