SOLID WASTE & HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
MTBE (Methyl tertiary - butyl ether)
Methyl tertiary - butyl ether (MTBE) is a chemical
that is often added to gasoline to reduce air pollution. While MTBE
may be good for air quality, it now appears to be very bad for other
parts of the environment, especially ground water. If MTBE gets
into a drinking water supply, it creates a bad smell and may pose
health concerns. Because gasoline is so widely used, MTBE finds
it's way into almost every part of the environment. To protect Lake
Tahoe, fuel containing MTBE is banned from sale in the Lake Tahoe
Basin within El Dorado County.
