Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) --
The California Geological Survey (CGS), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), has been working on a project to test the applicability of the Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) to identify the occurrence of ultramafic rock, serpentine, and asbestos minerals: CGS Survey Letter 11/7/03 and CGS Survey Letter 1/26/04. AVIRIS is a remote-sensing technology that may help identify these materials in areas where existing geologic mapping is insufficient. A portion of western El Dorado County has been included in this study because the previously published CGS study, Areas More Likely To Contain Natural Occurrences of Asbestos in Western El Dorado County, California (Open-File Report 2000-002), provides an opportunity to evaluate the method in a previously studied area where the distribution of bodies of serpentine and ultramafic rock are known.
