To report an outdoor air pollution problem, please call the District at (530) 621-6662 and be prepared to give the following information:

Who are you?

The air pollution personnel will need your name, address, and phone number for additional details or directions. Your name and address will be kept confidential.

Who should the air pollution inspector inspect?

If you don't know the person or company's name, please describe the person or business that is causing the problem.

What is the specific nature of your complaint?

If you're reporting illegal burning, tell us what is being burned.

Where is the problem?

If you cannot give a specific street address, then describe the color of the house.

When does the problem occur?

It is best to call while the problem is occurring, if at all possible. If there is a recurring air pollution problem, jot down the date and time and note any pattern. We can only respond to a call when the problem is occurring.

An air pollution inspector will investigate your report as soon as possible. If you have a complaint on a weekend or after normal business hours, please call Central Dispatch at (530) 621-6600. Ask for an environmental health specialist on call.

Depending on the inspector's findings, the investigation may result in a verbal warning, in the issuance of a written Notice to Comply, or in the issuance of a Notice of Violation to the responsible party. In the case of a serious air emission offense, there may be a monetary penalty associated with the Notice of Violation that is issued or the matter may result in civil or criminal prosecution.
